Schools are required to appoint designated personnel to ensure compliance with AHERA regulations.

Asbestos, a naturally occurring mineral fiber, was commonly used in building materials for its heat resistance and durability. However, prolonged inhalation of asbestos fibers can cause serious health issues including mesothelioma and asbestosis.

The EPA outlines aspects of asbestos management in schools, including inspection and re-inspection procedures, development of asbestos management plans, and communication with parents, teachers, and employee organizations within AHERA.
