Kyndra S. Miller
It is important that I use my intellectual capital to help the voiceless. I am a passion driven person and find fulfillment in helping people.
I began practicing law in 2003 as an eviction defense attorney at Legal Aid Foundation in Los Angeles, CA. We represented people at the poverty level or below to help them maintain their housing. After one year at Legal Aid, I opened an entertainment firm in Los Angeles – representing independent producers of television and film.
In 2008, I opened a second office in San Francisco, CA at Pier 5 Law Office. Pier 5 Law Office is a community of sole practitioners started by J. Tony Serra in the late 60s. It was under his tutelage that I decided to wind down my entertainment firm and bring my civil litigation and corporate transaction skills to the cannabis reform movement. To that end, I opened CannaBusiness Law in 2009.
While practicing cannabis law, I joined NORML (National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Law) and helped found the NORML Women’s Alliance. I was also a board member of the national organization for nine years. As a NORML Board member, I travelled across the country (and internationally) to help spread the word about the societal and legal implications of federal prohibition.
After cannabis was legalized in California, I decided to pursue other interests in the legal field. I wanted to find an area of law that would allow me to help marginalized people gain access to quality legal representation. To that end, I represented victims of childhood sexual assault for about one year before finding my dream job at Brayton Purcell.
As an attorney at Brayton Purcell, I have the opportunity to protect workers exposed to silicosis and asbestos in the workplace. I am grateful that the accumulation of my prior legal experience led me to a law firm that not only makes a difference in the lives of our clients and their families, but also the public at large.
What motivated/inspired you to become an attorney?
I have to give my Mother the credit for my decision to practice law. After I decided to major in U.S. History at UC San Diego, she immediately began to research my available career options. Amazingly, every time I came home from college for a visit – there happened to be an attorney sitting in our living room. During my senior year at UCSD, she finally put her foot down and said, “You are going to law school!” It was at this moment that I realized my decision had been made. But, once again – she steered me in the right direction, and I am forever grateful for her gentle (and not so gentle) encouragement to become an attorney.
