It was praised for its fireproofing and insulating properties, but the dangers of the substance eventually became evident.
Today asbestos is known to cause lung cancer, asbestosis, and mesothelioma. It has been documented as a known carcinogen and people are urged to avoid it. Although it has been phased out of many of U.S. products, it was used in over 3,000 items worldwide – many of which are still around today.
