Contaminated Water at Camp Lejeune Leads to Major Illnesses
July 8, 2022November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month
November 28, 2022Historically there have been only two ways to diagnose mesothelioma: histology and cytology.
Histology tests tissue and cytology tests fluid. Both tests are often performed to determine if a patient has mesothelioma. Often, the patient is in an advanced stage of mesothelioma at the time the tests are performed.
However, there is some hope for earlier diagnosis. A new study has discovered that a blood test called Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) can discover mesothelioma earlier than traditional methods.
FTIR is used to analyze the proteins left in the patient’s blood after blood cells and clotting proteins are removed. Researchers use analysis to study the results of the blood test that can accurately and efficiently identify malignant pleural mesothelioma.
The FTIR test is groundbreaking new technology because of its ability to diagnose mesothelioma accurately while being fast, cheap, and non-invasive.
Patients may now feel confident in their diagnosis and know they are receiving accurate treatment to enhance their prognosis. With the integration of this new method, mesothelioma might not be as difficult to diagnose.
