While many people think that asbestos exposure is a thing of the past, the dangerous carcinogen still poses a risk to workers and civilians when improperly removed from older homes and buildings. Recently, four Massachusetts-based companies agreed to pay $129,000 to settle a lawsuit accusing them of violating asbestos removal laws.
Patriots Environmental owned three companies that disregarded asbestos safety regulations put in place to protect workers and nearby residents. A 2014 lawsuit stated that the company failed to follow proper procedures and safety precautions while removing asbestos from an older home several years ago. They also failed to pay a $54,714 penalty for asbestos and hazardous waste violations. Patriots Environmental also failed to pull the proper permits and pay fees for two dozen jobs between November 2012 and December 2013.
By improperly handling asbestos materials, Patriots Environmental put many individuals’ health at risk. Under the terms of the settlement, the $64,000 penalty will be suspended if the defendants comply with a court-approved payment schedule and cause no further asbestos violations. Do you think this is enough?
Those exposed to asbestos have an increased risk for developing asbestos-related diseases, including asbestosis and mesothelioma. These conditions are painful and often fatal. If you have been diagnosed with an asbestos-related disease due to an employer’s failure to keep you safe on the job, do not hesitate to reach out to an experienced asbestos attorney.
