Vanessa Aguilar

From an early age, Vanessa Aguilar’s love for learning set the foundation for her lifelong passion for the law. She learned to read and write at just four years old and has been an avid reader ever since. Born and raised in Nicaragua, Ms. Aguilar graduated as an attorney at the age of 23 from the Jesuit university Universidad Centroamericana (UCA), one of the most prestigious institutions in her home country.

Ms. Aguilar holds a master’s degree in International Transactions and Comparative Law from the University of San Francisco. She is a member of the California State Bar. Outside activities include the California Applicant Attorneys Association — the largest organization of applicant attorneys in the state, where she currently serves on the Board of Directors, while also serving as President of the San Francisco Chapter.

Throughout her career, Vanessa has shared her expertise by speaking at conventions, hosting legal seminars, and educational webinars for other attorneys. She specializes in catastrophic injury cases resulting in 100% disability, representing some of the most seriously injured workers in California. Known for her zealous advocacy, diligence, and integrity, Vanessa is fully bilingual in Spanish and English and communicates directly with clients in their preferred language, ensuring trust, compassion, and clarity throughout the process. Her clients appreciate her accessibility — she provides her personal cell phone number so they can reach her directly with any questions or concerns during their case.

What motivated/inspired you to become an attorney?

Her inspiration to pursue law began in childhood. In 1988, when Hurricane Joan devastated Nicaragua, Vanessa witnessed families being displaced from their homes — confused and unaware of their legal rights as the government forced them to relocate. Even as a child, she felt a deep sense of responsibility to help people understand and defend their rights. That experience shaped her commitment to justice and inspired her journey into the legal profession.

What do you enjoy most about the work you do?

What I enjoy most about my work is the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. As the daughter of a teacher, I’ve always believed in the power of knowledge. When my clients come to me after being injured at work, many feel confused, scared, and unsure of their rights. I take pride in not only advocating for them but also teaching them about their rights under the law — empowering them to understand the process and make informed decisions.

When I first arrived in the United States, I taught myself English, which deepened my appreciation for how knowledge can transform lives. That experience continues to inspire me to educate and uplift others. I encourage my clients to share what they learn with others — especially with fellow workers who may face language barriers or lack access to legal information. Seeing my clients gain confidence, recover their stability, and then help others in their communities is one of the most rewarding aspects of my work.

What are your hobbies and interests? What do you like to do when you're not working?

Outside the courtroom, Vanessa is an advanced scuba diver who enjoys diving with sharks around the world. She also loves spending time with her two dogs, Eros and Zoe, and can often be found playing frisbee with them when she’s not in the office or under the sea.
