The asbestos attorneys at Brayton Purcell LLP have helped asbestos victims for more than 40 years. The following are examples of questions we often receive from clients.
What is Asbestos?
Asbestos is a naturally-occurring, fibrous mineral once used in many products due to its strength and ability to resist heat, as well as insulate. There is no “safe” level of exposure to asbestos; even minimal levels can cause the following asbestos-related diseases:
- Mesothelioma
- Lung Cancer
- Asbestosis
- Other Cancers
What is Mesothelioma?
Mesothelioma is an aggressive form of cancer that is caused by asbestos exposure. Mesothelioma is a cancer that affects the lining surrounding certain organs. Many individuals with mesothelioma might not experience cancer symptoms for 10 to 50 years after asbestos exposure. By that time, the cancer is normally so progressed that patients are only given a short time to live.
Are there different types of Mesothelioma?
The different types of mesothelioma are pleural, peritoneal, pericardial, and gonadal.
- Pleural mesothelioma is the most common type. Tumors commonly develop in the visceral or parietal layers of the pleura that separate the lungs from the chest wall.
- Peritoneal mesothelioma affects the lining around the stomach or abdomen.
- Pericardial mesothelioma develops in the thin lining that surrounds the heart.
- Gonadal mesothelioma develops in the male scrotum that surrounds the testicles.
What is asbestosis?
Asbestosis is a chronic lung disease caused by inhaling asbestos fibers. Prolonged exposure to these fibers can cause lung tissue scarring and shortness of breath. Asbestosis symptoms can range from mild to severe, and usually don’t appear until many years after continued exposure.
How was I exposed to asbestos?
Workers in the following industries are often exposed to asbestos: mining, insulation, shipbuilding, pipe fitting, plumbing, power generation, construction, textiles, auto repair, drywall, railroads, and appliance repair. While asbestos was phased out of the majority of products by the 90s due to the health risks, workers may still face exposure from asbestos that have not been properly removed and disposed of.
I didn’t work with asbestos on my job. How was I exposed?
People who live or work near sites containing asbestos may be exposed to airborne particles. Asbestos was also used in many consumer products such as hairdryers and baby powder. Family members may be exposed to asbestos fibers on the clothes of workers who work with or around asbestos products.
Who is liable for exposing me to asbestos?
Our mesothelioma lawyers seek compensation from companies who use asbestos products, remove asbestos products, or disturb asbestos products. We also seek compensation from companies that manufacture and supply products containing asbestos.
I can’t remember the name of the company that exposed me to asbestos. Can I still file a claim?
Our mesothelioma lawyers have experience handling asbestos claims all across the country. We match up your work history (compiled from your memory and your Social Security records) with our massive database of worker testimony and documents.
