The annual report features the year’s largest verdicts and defense victories. Data was recorded by VerdictSearch and includes an analysis of current trial trends, those involved in each case, claims and defenses, and appeals and post-trial activity.
The Novato plaintiff firm ranked 26 and 90 in cases against Asbestos Corporation Limited. Attorneys Christopher Hersom and Gilbert L. Purcell led the Desin case, in which the plaintiff claimed asbestos-containing joint compounds caused cancer. The Superior Court of San Francisco County awarded $13,227,939 in compensation.
In the Monaco proceeding, attorneys James P. Nevin, Jr. and Ksenia L. Snylyk represented a brick mason who claimed cancer due to asbestos joint compounds. The Superior Court of Los Angeles County awarded the plaintiff $1,979,228 in compensation.
Asbestos is banned in more than 50 countries, not including the U.S. Last year, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, 1,060 metric tons was imported from Brazil. Organizations such as the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization aim to get the deadly fiber banned and decrease the number of victims it claims. Currently, there is no cure for mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases.
