Volkswagen Faces Lawsuits after Emissions-Cheating Scandal

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently revealed that the auto maker, Volkswagen, used software in their “clean diesel” cars that deceived regulators measuring toxic emissions.

The EPA findings have caused a decline in the resale value of nearly 500,000 U.S. cars. VW Models affected include:

• VW Jetta TDI (Model Years 2009 – 2015)
• VW Jetta SportWagen TDI (Model Years 2009-2014)
• VW Golf TDI (Model Years 2010-2015)
• VW Golf SportWagen TDI (Model Year 2015)
• VW Beetle TDI and VW Beetle Convertible TDI (Model Years 2012-2015)
• VW Passat TDI (Model Years 2012-2015)

Audi model lines affected include the A1, A3, A4, A5, A6, TT, Q3 and Q5 ranges.

Lawsuits currently being filed against Volkswagen accuse the company of defrauding customers who purchased vehicles between 2009 and 2015. In some cases, customers paid more than $6,000 in premiums for models advertised as “clean diesel.” In reality, it is now alleged the cars were emitting up to forty times more pollution than federal regulations allow.

Not only have vehicle owners been affected by the scandal, Volkswagen shareholders are suffering as well. After the EPA announcement, VW stock dropped 30%.

Volkswagen dealers are worried about the violation of trust and how it affects their customers. Many are experiencing outrage from customers and are expecting to see a decrease in sales as they wait to hear from the federal government on how to handle recalls and repairs.
