While Portland, Oregon deals with its own asbestos problems, North Ridge Estates – a residential subdivision located about three miles north of Klamath Falls – is planning to clean up some of its own. The area is on the Environmental Protection Agency’s National Priority List, which is comprised of the most contaminated sites in the nation.
Asbestos-containing materials at the site are the result of the demolition of nearly eighty 1940’s-era military barracks buildings. Asbestos can be found in the soil and debris in the area.
Cleanup of the materials is set to begin in August of 2016. It is expected to take three years to clean up the asbestos-containing materials. The cleanup is part of a $30 million renovation planned for North Ridge Estates.
Asbestos is a toxic substance that is known to cause serious and fatal diseases, including asbestosis and mesothelioma. Those working in and living around the area are at risk for exposure.
