A temporary rule has been put in place in Oregon after concerns about the health and safety of residents grew in 2015. Locals were outraged when it was found that many homes and structures were being demolished without first being tested for asbestos. The dust from demolitions could be seen by nearby residents, yet they were not advised about the dangers of inhaling or digesting the potentially toxic debris.
The rule prohibits the demolition of a residence unless an accredited inspector has performed an asbestos survey. A permanent rule is set to be put in place later in 2016, after final approval.
