Thousands of Women Sue Over Health Risks from Chemical Hair Straighteners

Women who used chemical hair straighteners are being diagnosed with uterine cancer. One of those women is Kenya Apping. Apping was diagnosed with uterine cancer and underwent a hysterectomy under the advice of her doctor. She also underwent chemotherapy and radiation. Apping has used chemical hair straighteners since she was a child, and her doctor believes it to be the cause of her uterine cancer.

She and thousands of other black women are suing L’Oreal, Revlon, and other companies that make chemical hair straighteners.

Studies Show Risks Associated with Chemical Straighteners

The National Institutes of Health released a study finding that women who use chemical straighteners were more than twice as likely to develop uterine cancer. Chemicals in straighteners, like parabens and phthalates, are believed to be the cause of cancer in those who use the products.

A study at Boston University found that postmenopausal Black women who used straighteners long-term were also at increased risk of uterine cancer.
