Camp Lejeune Claims Piling Up

Claims are piling up with the U.S. military from exposure to toxins in the water at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, but no restitution has been made. The Marine base exposed many military members and their families to dangerous chemicals included in the water from 1953 on.

Toxic substances found in the water were 400 times more than what is considered allowable.

Millions of  Marines, civilian staff, and their family members who served and lived on base had no idea they were drinking, bathing their children and washing their clothes in water with trichloroethylene (TCE) and other toxins linked to 15 cancers and conditions, including bladder cancer, breast cancer, female infertility, miscarriage, kidney cancer, leukemia, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and neurobehavioral effects, including Parkinson’s disease.

In the early 1980s, the Marine Corps confirmed there were toxic chemicals in the water at Camp Lejeune but didn’t alert former residents of possible exposure until 1999.

In 2008, Congress ordered the Marine Corps to notify exposed veterans and staff of the risk. By that time, some had passed away or were gravely ill.
