Mesothelioma Inspiration: Move the World
May 23, 2014Asbestos brakes stop man’s life, jury awards $10.9 million
June 3, 2014May 26, marks Memorial Day in the United States in 2014! Today we remember the millions of men and women who have given their lives in service for America. The courage, determination, and bravery of our veterans is something to surely celebrate.
In our remembrance, we cannot forget about the thousands of veterans exposed to asbestos within the U.S. Military. Army, Navy, Air Force, and other vets are all at risk for developing asbestos-related diseases as a result of exposure during their time of service.
More than thirty percent of people in the U.S. diagnosed with mesothelioma are military veterans, and can expect years of their lives to be cut short by the disease. Many veterans were in charge of handling dangerous asbestos materials, while others worked around it in small spaces. Veterans were exposed to asbestos in Army vehicles, Navy ships, Air Force aircraft, and more.
All U.S. veterans are encouraged to alert their doctor to the possibility of past asbestos exposure, as the substance was used extensively within all branches of the military. Since the symptoms of mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases can take decades to develop, many veterans are surprised to learn that a small cough or sore abdomen could be the sign of a fatal tumor within their bodies.
As we remember those who so heroically gave their lives to our country for our freedom, we cannot forget those who have been affected by mesothelioma, a disease that is likely to claim a patient’s life only a year after diagnosis.
