Asbestos is everywhere. Not only has it been worked into homes, commercial buildings, and consumer products all over America, it can be found naturally within our environment. Six different, naturally occurring asbestos minerals can be found in locations around the country, some of which have been commercially mined for production in the past. Before the dangers of asbestos exposure were made public, stumbling upon miles and miles of asbestos was probably not unlike striking gold during the Gold Rush. A mine would be established, workers would be hired, and asbestos would start being processed into thousands of products. This form of asbestos is regulated as a toxic substance by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, so no mine will be constructed to remove the asbestos for commercial production. Even so, removal of the substance for the health and safety of nearby residents is a main concern. Asbestos exposure can cause deadly diseases within the human body.
